In this new work for 6 dancers Liz Gerring continues her longtime collaboration with artists Scherrer and Schumacher, layering her choreography with light and sound. The audience is seated within a multi-channel sound and multiple projection area where space is both marked and defined through the movement and relationship between all three mediums.

rise set twilight is the multimedia project of Linda Aubry Bullock and Michael T. Bullock.  Layering analog and digital feedback, phonography, and projections, rise set twilight creates immersive performance installations.  In 2009, rise set twilight performed at CABLE# Festival in Nantes, France; EMPAC in Troy, NY; and free103point9's Radio Festival NYC. 

For this performance, rise set twilight will create a live piece using field recordings; fuzzy drones of AM radio noise bands and forgotten cassettes; and video projections of rooms both real and fictional.

"We are artists, which is an excellent thing. We are married, also an excellent thing. We work together-not necessarily an excellent thing. What do we mean by this? Clearly, it isn't that we don't find inspiration in each other's work or ideas. However, on a practical level, it is hard to avoid some problems.  First of all, though we have been together for twenty years, whenever we work on a picture together, we spend most of our time arguing. Perhaps this isn't all that surprising. Van Gogh and Gauguin tried to work together in Arles. They stood side-by-side, produced some wonderful work,and ultimately came to hate each other. Our task may even be harder. They weren't married after all, and we don't want to end of hating each other. Still, as we say, working together generally produces conflict rather than peace.

Why? Primarily, it is because we come to a canvas from different directions. Igor's specialty is a subtle sense for color, a wonderful appreciation for the tactile nature of paint, canvas, and wood, and an intuitive feel for how to play with abstract images. Marina, on the other hand, possesses an excellent and subtle touch for realistic drawing and is capable of creating new images on the basis of the works of older artists, particularly those of the Italian and Dutch renaissance. We have been working towards our present level of cooperation for many years, first employing the techniques of realist art, then becoming interested in the achievements of abstraction, then those of the Russian avant-garde. "

This Saturday Jan 9th at 2:30 pm there will be special preview of a new work Lichtung/ Clearing by the Liz Gerring Dance Company.  The full work will debut from March 11 to 14th at the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

About Lichtung / Clearing:

In this new work for 6 dancers Liz Gerring continues her longtime collaboration with artists Scherrer and Schumacher, layering her choreography with light and sound. The audience is seated within a multi-channel sound and multiple projection area where space is both marked and defined through the movement and relationship between all three mediums.

Liz Gerring: "We're attempting to create an environment in which meaning is derived from the image not the story. Non-narrative movement is deepened by the other media, each following a parallel trajectory or tangent, allowing 'story' to exist independently for each member of the audience."

The Biomuse Trio was founded in 2008 to perform computer chamber music integrating traditional classical performance, laptop processing of sound, and the transduction of bio-signals for the control of musical gesture. The work of the ensemble encompasses hardware design, audio signal processing, bio-signal processing, composition, improvisation, and gesture choreography. The Biomuse Trio consists of Gascia Ouzounian, violin, Ben Knapp, biomuse, and Eric Lyon, computer.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Happy Holidays from hanrahanMeyers architects.  2009 has marked a very successful year for hMa.  In 2009 hMa had more projects in construction than we've ever had in one year.  hMa broke ground on the new Buddhist Training Center in Claverack, New York in November.  The Won Buddhist Training Center is a remarkable project where hMa designed five buildings, including residential halls, a Meditation Hall, and a 200-acre landscaped campus.  Battery Park City Community Center is in construction, and scheduled to be complete in 2011 with a Platinum LEED rating, the highest Green rating available. Infinity Chapel, featured above, is a 10,000 square foot chapel scheduled for completion in February 2010. We hope to see you at the opening for the Infinity Chapel.  Best wishes from hMa for 2010!

"Ursula von Rydingsvard born in Deensen, Germany (1942 -) is a sculptor who has been working in Brooklyn, New York for the past 30 years. She received her MFA from Columbia University in 1975 after which time she started to work with cedar, a material through which she has explored a wide range of images."

"Von Rydingsvard is best known for creating large-scale, often monumental sculpture from the cedar beams which she painstakingly cuts, assembles, and laminates, finally rubbing powdered graphite into the work's textured, faceted surfaces. She deliberately uses cedar boards milled into 4" by 4" widths with varied lengths which create a neutrality or "blank canvas" which enables her to dip into many different possibilities often within the arena of the psychological and emotional. As von Rydingsvard explains this approach: "If I were to say how it is that I break the convention of sculpture (and I'm not sure that's what I do or even if that's what I want to do), it would be by climbing into the work in a way that’s highly personal, that I can claim as being mine. "For some years Cornelia Parker’s work has been concerned with formalising things beyond our control, containing the volatile and making it into something that is quiet and contemplative like the ‘eye of the storm’. She is fascinated with processes in the world that mimic cartoon ‘deaths’ – steamrollering, shooting full of holes, falling from cliffs and explosions. Through a combination of visual and verbal allusions her work triggers cultural metaphors and personal associations, which allow the viewer to witness the transformation of the most ordinary objects into something compelling and extraordinary. Lately Parker’s attention has turned to issues of globalisation, consumerism and the mass-media."
